For a special baby shower, get together with the guests and purchase an
album baby quilt. Album quilts have a long history
in this country, commemorating special events such as anniversaries,
birthdays, marriages, and births. Along with the album quilt,
purchase a few special acid-free pens (found in craft stores) for
writing on fabric. These pens come in a variety of colors.
Place the baby quilt on a special table and place several chairs around
it. You may want to provide a few sheets of plain white card stock on
which well-wishers can practice before writing on the
fabric. Possibly a guest can "supervise" the event, helping others if
they have questions.
As each guest arrives, have them sign their names in the spaces on the
quilt constructed just for this purpose. They can also write
a special sentiment along with their name.
Album baby quilts usually have a sleeve on the back for
hanging the quilt on a wall. This traditional gift will become a family
heirloom treasured for generations.
Helpful hints:
- Place a
protective covering on your table before positioning the baby quilt on
the
surface.
- Have quests wash their hands
before touching the quilt. Explain
that oils on the skin can attach to the baby quilt's surface and show
up
years later. (Guests often have applied hand lotion before
their arrival.)
- It helps to
secure the space where you are writing with your fingers so
that the fabric cannot bunch up.
